Merling Finishes Second As Penguins Claim Third Place

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - Youngstown State junior Aislynn Merling finished second while the Penguins placed third at the Horizon League Women's Golf Championships which concluded on Sunday at the Mission Inn Resort.
Merling had a final-round 74 on Sunday and finished with a three-round score of 230 for the event. Detroit's Lindsey Lammers won the event with a 228. Lammers led Detroit to the team title as the Titans rallied to overtake Oakland by seven shots. Detroit won the tournament with a 943, Oakland finished second at 950, YSU was third at 955 while Valparaiso was fourth and Cleveland State fifth.
The Guins had a solid final day with a 314, the second-lowest team round of the day. YSU opened with a 312 on Friday and had a 329 on Saturday before rebounding on Sunday.
Merling equaled her first round score on Sunday with another one-over par 74. Merling had birdies on five, 13 and 18 and was even par for the first 11 holes. She concluded the tournament strong going one-under par on her final six holes.
Emily Dixon, who was the first round leader and was tied with Lammers for the lead following the second round, had a final round 83 and finished in eighth place. She also ended the event on a good note going one-under par on the last six holes.
Allison Mitzel, the 2013 Horizon League Champion, continued her consistent play with a final round 79. Mitzel had rounds of 80 on Friday and Saturday to finish the event with a 238 which tied her for 12th. She had birdies on No. 12 and No. 13 and was two-under par on backside until the final two holes.
Emily Rohanna had her best round of the tournament with a 78 on Sunday. Rohanna finished 26th with a three-round score of 250. On Sunday, she carded birdies on one, 12 and 14 and was two-over for her round through the first 17 holes.
Mia Barchetti posted a score of 257 for the event and finished 32nd in her Horizon League debut.
