The Youngstown State swimming and diving team will start action at the Horizon League Championships on Wednesday at the Busby Natatorium hosted by Cleveland State.
Premium one-day tickets are $13, general-admission one-day tickets are $10, premium all-session tickets are $45 and all-session general admission tickets are $35. The all-session tickets are good for all four days.
Junior Ashley Dow swept the backstroke events in dominating fashion at the league meet last March. She also became the first YSU swimmer to defend an event title after winning the 100-yard backstroke crown in 2012. She is vying for her third straight 100-back title this week.
Dow set a new conference record with a time of 54.40 seconds in the 100 back, surpassing the mark she set as a freshman in 2012. A day later, she won the 200 back by two-and-a-half seconds with another conference-record time of 1:58.68.
Dow is currently ranked fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and ninth in the 200 back entering the league meet. Dow will swim individual events the final three days.
Senior Laura Paz is 10th in the 100-yard butterfly as well as the 200 fly. Those events are on the schedule for Friday and Saturday. Paz finished eighth in the 100 and 10th in the 200 at last year's meet.
The 2014 championships will feature Oakland for the first time and that could make for an interesting meet. Milwaukee was the Horizon League Champion in 2013 beating Cleveland State by 31 points. YSU scored 343 points to place sixth at the meet.
Finals on all four days are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. starting with Wednesday's events. The preliminary rounds are set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Wednesday three events are on the schedule with the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay set to get the meet underway.
On Thursday, the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving prelims/finals and 400-yard medley relay are on tap.
On Friday, the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 800-yard freestyle relay are on the schedule.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, three-meter diving prelims/finals and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
