
Penguins Have Impressive Start to Dual Slate Against Niagara

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team posted wins in every event as the Penguins opened the dual season with an impressive 166-120 win over Niagara on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Ashley Dow and Madison Aranda won three events while Jana Janson, Viktoria Orosz, Kolbrun Jonsdottir and freshman diver McKenzie Stetler each won two events against the Purple Eagles.
Dow opened the meet by picking up a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.10 seconds. She took first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.75 and won her third event of the day winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.92.
In the 1,650 freestyle, Aranda cruised to the win with a time of 17:46.61. She picked up her second win of the dual with a time of 2:09.91 and earned her third win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.82 seconds.
Orosz set a school and school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.73. Later in the meet, Orosz won the 500 free with a time of 5:04.92.
Jonsdottir won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.09 and the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:32.34.
Janson claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.53 seconds and also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.34 seconds. Placing second in the 100 free was Stef van Niekerk.
Stetler won the one-meter dive with a score of 268.05 while Lydia Scheringer was second at 262.35. With their performances, both qualified for Zones. Stetler later won the 3-meter dive with a score of 288.01. She qualified for the Zone Meet in the 3-meter as well.
YSU returns to action next Saturday when it swims against Valparaiso and Cleveland State in Cleveland.
