Penguins Win 11 Events to Edge Saint Francis (Pa.), 149-139

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State swimming and diving team won nine individual events and both relays to edge Saint Francis (Pa.) 149-139 on Friday evening at the Beeghly Natatorium.
The Penguins improved to 3-1 in dual meets with the victory over the Red Flash.
The meet was undecided up until the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the winner of that race would win the night. The Penguins trailed after each of the first three legs, but YSU freshman Jana Janson outswam the Saint Francis anchor by more than two seconds to help the Penguins win with a time of 3:37.60.
Janson also held off the Red Flash anchor in the 400 medley relay as YSU won with a time of 4:02.57.
Ashley Dow won three individual events and was also on the winning medley relay team to finish as the meet's top scorer. The sophomore took first in the 100 back (59.60 seconds), the 200 back (2:07.02) and the 200 IM (2:12.46). Her time in the IM was a career best.
Sam Roberts won both breaststroke events, swimming a 1:07.43 in the 100 and a 2:24.46 in the 200 to win by more than four seconds. Megan Ciampa's career-best time of 1:58.26 earned her a win in the 200 free, and Laura Paz won the 200 fly in 2:10.78.
Casey Hill took first in one-meter diving with a score of 248.55, and Tricia Vallinger won the three-meter with a score of 236.40.
Janson took second in both the 50 and 100 free, and Paz was second in the 100 fly. Ciampa was third in the 100 free, and Liseli Baich finished third in both breaststroke events. Each diver also earned a second-place nod.
Four of the Red Flash's wins came in individual freestyle events, and they owned the top three spots in the 1,000 and 500 free. Their other win came in the 100 fly when Libby Francis out-touched Paz by .17 seconds.
Youngstown State will compete at the Cleveland State Invitational next Friday through Sunday. That will be the Penguins' final meet of the fall.
