Penguins Lose Spring Opener at Michigan State

East Lansing, Mich. -- The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its season dropping a 7-0 decision at Michigan State on Saturday.
The Penguins' Felipe Rosa dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6 (4) decision at No. 2 singles to the Spartans' Clark Richardson. At No. 1, MSU's Drew Lied knocked off Tariq Ismail 6-1 and 6-3.
"I was happy with the way the guys fought today, but we have a lot of work to do next week," Head Coach Mark Klysner said. "Having only gotten to practice this week and playing a Big Ten school who had been playing for two weeks already, I thought the guys did as well as expected. I expect us to be ready for our next match against IPFW."
In action at No. 3 singles, Max Schmerin lost 6-3, 6-0 to Mat Nelson while the Spartans' Christian Roehmer defeated Zeeshan Ismail 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 action. At No. 5, Ryan Richmond beat the Penguins' Rodrigo Campos 6-1, 6-1.
YSU dropped the doubles matches 8-4, 8-3 and by default.
The Penguins return to action on Feb. 5 at IPFW.
