Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's
basketball team (6-14) is in the middle of an eight-day, four-game
swing and hits the road for a rare February non-league contest at
Oakland (11-10), Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Athletics Center O'rena in
Rochester, Mich.
The Penguins are looking for their second straight victory and
their first win over Oakland since the 1999-2000 campaign.
Youngstown State is coming off a thrilling 66-64 victory over
Loyola on Saturday at the Beeghly Center.
Sophomore Monique Godfrey led four Penguins in double figures
with a career-best 20 points and scored the game-winning basket
with 10 seconds remaining.
Junior Lauren Branson added 11 points and six assists while
sophomores Nikita LaFleur and Ashley Pendleton each contributed 10
points and seven rebounds. LaFleur also blocked five shots in the
victory.
Scouting the Golden Grizzlies
Oakland is riding a seven-game winning streak after beginning the
season with a 4-10 mark and now stand at 11-10 overall. The Golden
Grizzlies are also 7-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference. Sophomore
Jessica Pike leads the Golden Grizzlies with 14.2 points per game
and NIcole Piggott owns a 13.4 points per game scoring average.
The Oakland Series
This will be the ninth meeting between Youngstown State and the
second in two years. The Golden Grizzlies have won the last five
games, including a 61-54 decision at the Beeghly Center last
season. YSU has not defeated the Golden Grizzlies since the
1999-2000 season.
Mo On the Money
Sophomore Monique Godfrey showcased her offensive prowess against
Loyola on Saturday. Not only did Godfrey set a career high with 20
points, she hit the game-winning shot with 10 seconds remaining.
Godfrey connected on 8-of-15 from the field against the
Ramblers.
Droppin' Dimes
Youngstown State points guard Lauren Branson has been quite
generous as of late. Over the last three games, Branson has dished
out 18 assists for an average of six assists per game.
Penguin Benchmarks
For the second straight game, theYoungstown State bench made a
significant impact on the game. Sophomore Nikita LaFleur posted
double figures for the second straight game off the bench with 10
points against the Loyola. LaFleur also posted seven rebounds and a
career-best five blocks.
Penguins Hold Foe Under 40
Giving up just 39 points to Detroit on Jan. 13, the Penguins held
an opponent to under 40 points in a game for the first time since
holding Malone to 25 points on Dec. 29, 1990. Detroit's eight
points in the first half was also a new low for points allowed in a
half.
Hill Completes Circuit
After defeating UIC, Youngstown State Head Coach Tisha Hill has
defeated every school in the Horizon League at least once since
becoming head coach prior to the 2003-04 season.
Assist Me Please
Junior Lauren Branson continues her ascent up the YSU all-time
assists chart. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 283
career assists and needs 28 more to move into 10th place on the
career chart.
Pendleton Ties Scoring High
Sophomore Ashley Pendleton turned in one of her top career
performances against the Ramblers on Saturday. Pendleton tied a
career high with 10 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Schloemp Streak at 64
With an appearance against Loyola on Saturday, junior Jessica
Schloemp extended her games played streak to 63 straight.
Schloemp's consecutive games started streak ended at 34 after she
did not start against Indiana State on Dec. 6.
