In the late 70's and early 80's, when you thought of women's basketball locally, and you thought of a dominant player who excelled in the game, the name Wanda Grant was the first mentioned and a second player was tough to think of that could compare to her game. A native Youngstowner who attended nearby Chaney HS, she helped lead head coach Joyce Ramsey's squad to a 60-21 overall ledger and four straight OAISW (Ohio Association of Intercollegiate Sports for Women) play-off appearances. She set the all-time scoring record of 1,829 career points (that record has since been broken by Dorothy Bowers who last season, concluded her four-year career and amassed 2,324 total points), and at one point in her career, held no less than 12 scoring or rebounding records. The standards that were set by Grant are the standards by which we judge our current women's players. She currently ranks in the top 10 in every offensive scoring and rebounding category in the women's basketball record book. That is quite an accomplishment!
