A graduate from nearby Woodrow Wilson High School, Tony DelBene was another of the fine list of athletes in both baseball and basketball who opted to stay home to play in front of the hometown fans, and do their thing for head coach Dom Rosselli. He played for Rosselli's diamond men form 1965 to 1968, helping them to a 67-22 overall slate. As a freshman, he batted .310, followed that up with a .343 batting average his sophomore year, hit .369 as a junior then culminated a fine four year career in 1968 with a .419 batting average as he earned AACBC (American Association of College Baseball Coaches) First Team All American honors. His lifetime .364 batting average is one of the tops offensively of any Penguin to ever lace up a pair of spikes. A teacher and coach on the scholastic level, he was selected as the Director of Athletics at Girard High School 1984, remaining in that capacity until 1986, and currently is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Mahoning Valley Conference. Tom married the former Tara Sengarin and they reside in Youngstown OH. They have two children Anthony (age 23) and John (age 19).
