Called by his late coach, Dike Beede, “one of the toughest, hard nosed Penguins to ever lace up a pair of spikes,” the nearby East High School graduate played in 1941 and 1942 (prior to World War II), went in the army to serve his country during the war, then returned to the Penguin campus to finish his education and played football once again in both 1946 and 1947. He earned his BS in Education from YSU in 1948, his MA from Westminster in 1952, was the head football coach at East High School from 1949 to 1961, but perhaps his greatest claim to fame was winning the national scholastic football title for the deaf in both 1966 and 1972 with the California School for the Deaf (in Riverside, CA). One of the most modest and humble athletes to ever suit up for the Penguins.
