A charter member of the Penguin's first football team in 1938, much can be said about that entire 1938 team as they laid the groundwork of the football program. A hard nosed player with plenty of desire to match his hard hitting play, he lettered four straight years (from 1938 to 1941) for head coach Dwight "Dike" Beede's team, helping to lead them to a 22-11-12 overall mark. He is the only member of this year's class to enter the hall of fame posthumously, his untimely death coming at the age of 54 while a police sergeant with the Youngstown Police Department. He also served with the Armed Services on Guam during World War II. Both of his sons, Thomas and John, are graduates of YSU and played football for head coach Dike Beede as their father has during the infancy of the program. He graduated from YSU in 1942. Matzie is wife, Mary, and their two sons, John and Thomas.
