Matt Hogg joined the football program in 1993 receiving a partial scholarship. By the time his career was done he had started his last 37 games at offensive guard, was an All American and signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Detroit Lions.

A three year starter on the offensive line, Hogg helped lead the Penguins to the National championship in 1997. He was also part of the 1993 and 1994 national Championship teams during his career.

Recently he was selected as one of the top 25 players in Stambaugh Stadium's 25 year history.

As a senior, Hogg earned numerous All America honors. He was named first team Associated Press, American Football Quarterly, ESPN/ SportsTicker, CNN/SI and Sports Network All American. Hogg was also tabbed an AFCA and Walter Camp All American.

In 1997, the Penguins went 13-2 capping the year with a 10-9 victory over McNeese State in the National Championship Game. For the year, YSU averaged 32.7 points and 371.4 yards per game.

A first team All Gateway pick, he was the conference's Offensive Lineman of the Week against Slippery Rock, was a two time YSU Offensive Lineman of the Week and served as team captain.

In 1996, Hogg started all 11 games for the 8-3 Penguins. For his efforts throughout the year he was named the team Offensive Lineman of the Year. During the campaign he was a two time YSU offensive Lineman of the week.

During the National Championship campaign in 1994, Hogg served as a reserve offensive lineman. In 1994, the Guins finished with an impressive 14-0-1 mark setting a school record for wins in a season. The Penguins capped an impressive year with a 28-14 win over Boise State in the title game.

His first season with the program was in 1993 when he redshirted. He was a scout team member as the Penguins posted a 13-2 mark and won the National Championship. He was the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week against Buffalo and Stephen F. Austin.

Hogg signed free agent contracts with three NFL Teams – the Detroit Lions, Caroline Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. He played two seasons in NFL Europe with Barcelona participating in the 1999 World Bowl. He also played in the XFL for Birmingham.

He earned his degree from YSU in Civil Engineering. He is a regional sales manager for the Sports Construction Group in Strongsville.

A three sport athlete, he was a second team all conference selection as a senior and an honorable mention pick as a junior for Slippery Rock High School.

Matt and his wife Carrie have a daughter, Julia and a newborn son Jonathan.
