The front runner of today's athletic/academic advisor's, Mary B. Smith was as much a part of the Penguin athletic family as the athletes themselves. From 1939 to 1981, a span of 42 years, she was employed by the university in various capacities but played an integral part in the advising and counseling of all Penguin athletes. She has received many awards and citations over the years, including the Hiram College Alumni Achievement Award, Penguin of the Year Award, Honorary Doctor of Humanities Award, and the YSU Heritage Award. She saw the university grow from 723 then to its approximate 15,000 enrollment today. And despite retiring in 1982, has continued to be available today for counseling services or however she can be of help to the university and its students.
