Career Highlights: Was one of the top producing hitters in the baseball program’s history. He still ranks third in school history with a .376 batting average with 245 career hits. His hit total ranks fifth in program history. He is also seventh in runs scored with 130. Koehnlein was a All-Horizon League first-team selection in 2007 and was named to the second team in 2006. In 2007, he had a school-record .434 batting average with school bests 108 hits in 249 at bats.

2009 (Senior): Played in 50 games, making 47 starts…led the team with a .385 batting average with 65 hits in 169 at bats…led the team with 11 stolen bases…had five doubles, four triples and a homer during the year…scored 34 runs and had 18 RBI…had a team-best 24 multi-hit games…made 21 starts at DH, 13 in left field, 12 in right field and one in center…closed out the season on nine-game hitting streak (20-of-34)…had a season-high four hits in five at bats at Wright State (March 21)…had three-hit games against James Madison, Butler, Marshall, Wright State, Valpo and Buffalo…scored three runs against Butler, Toledo and Buffalo.

2008 (Junior): Overcame a slow start to display glimpses of what made him one of the Horizon League's best hitters as a sophomore toward the end of the season... batted .288 with 13 runs and nine steals in 33 games... started 25 times - 23 in center field and two at designated hitter... had 30 hits in 104 at bats… had two doubles and a homer… stole nine bases despite missing a month with a broken bone in his hand... hit .419 over his last nine games to up his average 55 points... also batted .317 against league opponents and .313 against righties... had four hits twice, going 4-for-6 against Valparaiso (April 4) and 4-for-5 at Milwaukee (May 15)... also stole two bases against Valparaiso (April 4). 

2007 (Sophomore): Named First-Team All-Horizon League at third base ... ranked fourth in the country in batting average with a .434 clip ... was also the fifth-toughest player in the nation to go down on strikes with one strikeout per 22.6 at bats ... unofficially, he led the nation with 1.93 hits per game and finished fourth in hits with 108 ... finished the year on a school-record 29-game hitting streak, which ranked as the fifth-longest in the country ... batted .474 with 28 runs and 22 RBIs over his 29-game streak .... also earned All-Horizon League Tournament honors after batting .524 with six runs and six RBIs in four games ... set YSU and Horizon League Tournament single game records with six hits against Butler (5/24) ... set the school record with 108 hits, which was also the third-most for a single season in Horizon League history ... shattered the school hits record by 28 ... batted .436 against Horizon League opponents during the regular season, which was a league high ... his .434 average was the second-highest in school history and the highest since YSU moved to the Division I level in 1982 ... had 97 singles, 24 of which were infield hits - 10 were bunts ... batted .440 against lefties and .430 against righties ... posted two hits or more 29 times in 56 games, including 16 times in his 29-game hitting streak ... had hits in 52 of YSU’s 56 games ... also had a 13-game hitting streak during the year and continued a six-game hitting streak from his freshman year by hitting in the first six in 2007 ... hit .542 with runners on base, .524 with runners in scoring position and had a team-high 16 two-out RBIs ... posted career-highs in every offensive category except home runs ... led the team in average, hits, on-base percentage, runs, total bases, steals, at bats and games played ... posted five hits in five at bats against Butler (4/28) ... recorded four hits against Butler (3/24), UIC (3/31), Cleveland State (4/10) and Notre Dame College (5/2) ... scored a season-high three runs four times ... drove in a career-high five runs against Butler in the Horizon League Tournament (5/24) ... was never struck out more than once in the same game.

2006 (Freshman): Named Second-Team All-Horizon League as a third baseman ... also named to the All-Newcomer Team as a position player ... was a key player toward the end of the season, starting 24 of the final 26 games after starting five six of the first 29 ... after becoming an everyday starter on April 11, he hit .337 and scored a team-best 23 runs ... ranked third on the team in stolen bases with seven ... hit .330 in Horizon League games and .389 against southpaws ... posted 12 multi-hit games, including three-hit games against Cleveland State (4/11) and Butler (4/29) ... finished the year on a six-game hitting streak ... hit his first career home run at Kent State (4/12) ... stole two bases at Wofford (3/4) and at Xavier (3/18) ... scored a career-high three runs at UW-Milwaukee (4/15).

High School: Was a three-time letterwinner and one-time team captain ... named First-Team All-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and Steubenville Herald Star Player of the Year as a senior ... earned First-Team Eastern District honors as a senior and second-team accolades as a junior ... played in the OVAC All Star game as a senior.

Other: Earned a degree in General Studies from YSU...is the General Manager of Best One Fleet Service of the Ohio River Valley...John and his wife, Heather, have two children - Madison and Maisy.
