The quarterback on the very first Youngstown State University football squad in 1938, he was instrumental in guiding the Penguins to a 4-5-0 record in their very first season of intercollegiate football competition. The first two squads posted 4-5-0 slates, but the last two teams were 7-1-1 and 7-0-1 respectively, a combined 14-1-2 slate. He was a four-year starter at quarterback and earned four letters while a Youngstown State University.
