Gregg Merrill was the first two-sport athlete ever honored by the Youngstown State University Alumni Association for his achievements in baseball and men’s basketball. He received six varsity letters, three in baseball and three in basketball.
A native of Delta, Ohio, where he attended Delta High School, Merrill was a lifetime .326 batÂter, playing in 93 games for the Penguins. One of the best defensive players in YSU history, Merrill belted seven home runs in his career, which also included him tying the school record for home runs in a game with two.
A three-year starter, Merrill was a member of some very successful squads that set or tied Penguin records for most wins in a season, finishing 21-10, 24-15, and 24-9. Merrill was a member of one the better teams in school history as he guided the Penguins to an NCAA Regional appearance, earning him first-team All-Tournament honors.
A member of the basketball team, Merrill was an outÂstanding guard on some of the winningest teams in school history.
He scored 366 career points, grabbed 306 rebounds and dished out 186 assists. He was a member of Dom Rosselli's "super six", a group of seniors that combined to push YSU to the best four-year record in Penguin basketball history at 82-25.
He graduated from YSU with a degree in comprehenÂsive social studies and earned his master's degree from Bowling Green University in guidance and counseling.
He currently works for the Napoleon Area schools.
Merrill lives in Napoleon, Ohio, with his wife, Renee, and his daughter, Jill.
