One of the most influential businessman in the Mahoning Valley, Clarence R. Smith has been a true friend to the Youngstown State University Intercollegiate Athletics Department.
Whatever has been asked of him or his company by members of the YSU staff, Mr. Smith has been very gracious in his giving.
Being a loyal and faithful follower of Penguin athletics, Mr. Smith is a big reason why we have a beautiful 20,000 seat stadium, 26 scholarship loges and DeBartolo Stadium Club. Mr. Smith served as the co-chair of the Stambaugh Stadium project and was instrumental in the brick campaign. The Compco Company have also been loyal loge owners over the last couple of years.
He is Chairman of the Board of Diamond Steel Construction Company, Compco Industries and its affiliates. He also serves on the Board of Home Savings & Loan Association of Youngstown.
During his junior year at Kenyon, Smith was called home to take over the management of the company due to his father having a stroke. He has been the leader of various companies since that date. A partial list of these companies is: Compco Industries, Compco Land Company, Buckeye Manufacturing, and Adamis Fine Jewelry & Gifts.
Over the years, Mr. Smith has been influential in many of the civic groups in the Valley. He is a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church and its official board. He is also a member of the Mahoning Valley Council of Churches and Organization of ProtesÂtant Men. Mr. Smith also serves on the Board of Directors of the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries, Board of Directors of Boy Scouts of America, Mahoning Valley Council Trustee Boy Scouts of America, Camp Stambaugh, Board of Directors of Youngstown P.I.C., Member of Board of Directors of the Mahoning County Library Board, and Member of the Western Reserve Port Authority.
A man who is involved in as many things as he is usually well decorated with many different awards. Mr. Smith's honors include Honorary Member Buckeye Elks Lodge #7, Man of the Year Boardman Civic Association, and Private Sector Business Award from the Better Business Bureau. He is an active member of Boardman Rotary Club and Elks Lodge #55 in Youngstown, Ohio.
