When head coach Dwight "Bike" Beede was assembling his first football squad in 1938, it was a blend of veterans with no collegiate football experience, and youth with the intestinal fortitude to make a success of this maiden venture into college athletics. Carmen Julius, from nearby Campbell, Ohio, wasn't big by any standards using today's athletes or the athletes of yesteryear as a barometer, but as a veteran on the field of play, his contribution meant so much to Beede that he named him the captain of that very first football squad. A gutsy player with a hard nosed style of play, he was one of the hardest hitters to ever play the game and one of the classiest to ever lace up a pair of spikes for his modesty is overshadowed by very few. He helped those first two squads post 4-5-0 ledgers which actually paved the way for a 7-1-1 mark in 1940. He lettered two times in football, but his contribution to the Penguin athletics department goes far beyond that for as a teacher and coach on the scholastic level in the Campbell school system, he helped most the minds of many future Penguins athletes and students.
