Playing for head coach Dike Beede's gridders from 1946 to 1949, Augie Yahn helped the team to an overall 23-9-3 mark and put the program on the map when the program was started up again in 1946 after World War II. A nuts and bolts player who went both ways, the Campbell Ohio native was a four year letterman for the Penguins, was the team captain during his senior season (with Frank Davanzo) in 1949, then when he went to the Marines during the Korean conflict, played against the Penguins with the Camp LeJuene Marines in 1951, leading them to a 19-6 victory over Beede's Penguins. He had tryouts with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1950, then with the Washington Redskins in 1952. He was considered one of the strongest, toughest, and hardest hitting Penguins to ever lace up a pair of football spikes.
