Rugola Leads Penguins to Second-Place Finish at Roseann Schwartz Invitational

Junior Danae Rugola finished second in the individual standings to lead the Youngstown State women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational on Tuesday at Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman, Ohio.

The Penguins' Red Team posted a two-round team score of 598 to finish eight strokes back of the tournament champion Akron. After recording a 306 in the first round on Monday, Youngstown State carded a 292 on Tuesday to move into second place. The Penguins were tied for third after the first round of action.

YSU's two-round 598 ranks as the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in program history. In addition, the Penguins' second-round 292 is tied for the eighth-lowest 18-hole score in school history. Youngstown State's White Team finished 12th with a two-round 663 (327-336).

Rugola finished the day tied atop of the individual leaderboard with a two-round 146 (73-73). Rugola tied for first place with Jenn David and Abbie Pearce of Akron. Based on tiebreaker rules, David was named tournament medalist, Rugola placed second and Pearce finished third. Rugola's one-over-par 73 in the final round featured 10 pars and four birdies.

Christina Lewis tied for fifth place with a two-round score of 148 (76-72). The junior's even-par 72 in the second round, which matched the lowest round of her career, included 10 pars and four birdies. Madie Smithco finished in 12th place with a two-round 151 (80-71). The sophomore's career-low round of 71 in the second session featured 11 pars and four birdies.

Lizzie Saur fired a two-round total of 153 (77-76) to finish in a tie for 15th. The freshman's second-round 76 included eight pars and three birdies. Jenna Vivo concluded the tournament with a two-round 167 (84-83) to tie for 60th. The senior's final-round 83 featured seven pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 18.

Tori Utrup finished tied for 31st with a two-round score of 158 (77-81). The senior's final-round 81 included six pars and three birdies. Ally St. Clair posted a two-round 160 (80-80) to finish in a tie for 39th. The junior's second-round 80 featured six pars and four birdies.

Britney Jonda tied for 57th with a two-round total of 166 (81-85). The senior's final-round 85 included eight pars. In her first collegiate tournament, Kelly Hutton finished 76th with a two-round 179 (89-90). The freshman's second-round 90 featured four pars and a pair of birdies.

Akron posted rounds of 297 and 293 to finish in first place with a two-round 590. Cleveland State finished nine strokes back of YSU in third place with a 607. Detroit Mercy and Evansville each finished with a 618 to tie for fourth place.

Youngstown State will resume its fall schedule on Oct. 4-5 with the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Mich.
