Rugola Earns Top-25 Finish to Lead Penguins at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Junior Danae Rugola finished tied for 25th to lead the Youngstown State women's golf team to a 13th-place finish on Tuesday in the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Penguins finished with a three-round team score of 901, which ranks as the fifth-lowest 54-hole performance in program history. After posting a 308 in the first round on Monday, YSU bounced back with scores of 299 and 294 over the final two sessions. The Penguins' final-round 294 ranks as the team's second-lowest 18 hole score this season. Youngstown State was 16th in the team standings following the first round of play.

Rugola finished tied for 25th with a three-round score of 221 (74-79-68). The performance matches the lowest 54-hole score of her career. The junior's first-round 74 featured 12 pars and two birdies as she made par or better on seven of her final eight holes. The Uniontown, Pa., native fired an even-par 36 on the back nine during the opening round.

Rugola's second-round 79 included 11 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 2 as she made par on seven of her final nine holes. The junior's four-under-par 68 in the final round, which matches the lowest round of her career, is tied for the fifth-lowest round in program history. During the final session, Rugola carded eight pars and an impressive seven birdies as she fired a two-under-par 34 on the front and back nine. She recorded four straight birdies from No. 4 to No. 7 as she made par or better on 13 of her final 15 holes. Rugola has now earned a top-25 finish and been YSU's top finisher in each the team's five events this season.

Madie Smithco finished tied for 43rd with a career-best three-round 226 (82-71-73). The sophomore's first-round 82 included nine pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 13. Smithco's one-under-par 71 in the second round, which matches the lowest round of her career, featured 10 pars and five birdies as she made par or better on 13 of her final 15 holes. The Cranberry Township, Pa., native carded a two-under-par 34 on the front nine during the second session. Smithco's final-round 73 included 10 pars and four birdies as she made par or better on 11 of her final 13 holes. She fired a one-under-par 35 on the back nine during the final round of play.

Lizzie Saur finished with a career-best three-round 227 (75-76-76) to tie for 48th. The freshman's first-round 75 featured 15 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 3 as she made par or better on 13 of her first 14 holes. The Grove City, Ohio, native's second-round 76 included nine pars and three birdies as she carded a one-over-par 37 on the front nine. Saur's final-round 76 featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 7 as she made par or better on 11 of her first 13 holes. She fired an even-par 36 on the front nine during the final session.

Christina Lewis concluded the event with a three-round total of 238 (77-74-87). The junior's first-round 77 included 10 pars and a pair of birdies as she made par or better on seven of her final eight holes. The Wexford, Pa., native recorded a one-over-par 37 on the back nine during the opening round. Lewis' second-round 74 featured 10 pars and four birdies as she made par or better on nine of her final 10 holes. The junior fired an even-par 36 on the back nine during the second session.

Tori Utrup finished the tournament with a three-round score of 241 (86-78-77). The senior's first-round 86 included 12 pars as she made par on nine of her final 11 holes. The Uniontown, Ohio, native's second-round 78 featured 12 pars as she made par on 11 of her final 13 holes. The senior's final-round 77, which matches her low round of the season, included 13 pars as she made par on nine of her final 12 holes.

North Florida claimed the tournament title at eight under par with a three-round team score of 856. South Florida finished as the runner up with an 867 while Sam Houston placed third with an 870. College of Charleston (872) and Xavier (879) rounded out the top five of team standings.

Sam Houston's Zulaikah Nasser earned medalist honors at 10 under par with a three-round (68-68-70) while North Florida's Christin Eisenbeiss placed second with a 209 (70-71-68).
