12 • John McElroy (1965-69)
Youngstown, Ohio
Played for the
Penguins from 1965-69 and scored 1,942 career points. McElroy scored a
school-record 72 points in a game against Wayne State on Jan. 26, 1969. He also
had a 52-point game against Illinois Wesleyan on Dec. 28, 1968. In the game
against Wayne State he had school marks for field-goals made (29) and field-goal
attempts (59). During his four years at YSU, his squads compiled an overall
record of 73-29. He also holds school records scoring 729 points in a single
season and averaging 28 points in a single year. In his career, he attempted
1,959 field goals making 846 shots. He led the Penguins in scoring for three
consecutive seasons.
33 • Dorothy Bowers (1984-1988)
Youngstown, Ohio
Bowers is the women's programs all-time
leader in points scored with 2,324.
She ranks second with 1,083 career
rebounds. For her career she
averaged 21.5 points and 10.0
rebounds per game. She is one of two
Penguins to score more than 2,000
points and grab 1,000 rebounds. She
also holds school marks for
free-throw attempts, field-goals
made, field-goal attempts and
field-goal percentage. She scored a
school-record 49 points against Kent
State in November 1985.
36 • Tony Vivo (1936-40)
Youngstown, Ohio
Vivo is the first Penguin to have his
jersey retired after playing from 1936-40. Vivo was a two-time captain (1938 and
1940) and a two-time leading scorer for YSU (1936 and 1937). He was a four-time
letterwinner for the YSU basketball team. In 1937 he led the team scoring 189
points.
40 • Leo Mogus (1939-43)
Youngstown, Ohio
Mogus was the first Penguin to advance
to the professional basketball ranks after playing at YSU from 1939-43. A center
for the Penguins, he scored 1,400 career points playing in 77 games. He scored
more than 300 points in all four seasons, including a best 391 as a junior. His
senior season he averaged 22.1 points per game scoring 354 points in 16 games.
He played for Philadelphia in the NBA. He was also drafted by the NFL’s
Washington Redskins in 1942.
55 • Jeff Covington (1974-78)
Washington, D.C.
Covington is YSU’s all-time leading
scorer with 2,424 career points. He played for the Penguins from 1974-1978. In
his career, he averaged 22.9 points per game. He made a school-record 956 field
goals and had a field-goal percentage of 57.4. He also finished second in school
history with 1,381 total rebounds averaging 13 boards per game. In 1978 he was
named the Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. He was a three-time
Division II All-American earning honors in 1975-76, 1976-77 and 1977-78. He is
tied for the school record scoring more than 30 points in a game on 14
occasions, including a career-best 46 against Mankato State in 1978.
