Youngstown State junior middle blocker Sarah Varcolla has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 6-12, the conference office announced on Monday.

Varcolla, a native of New Philadelphia, Ohio, averaged a league-best 1.86 blocks per set with 13 blocks overall in the Penguins' two matches last week. She had three solo blocks and a block assist at Wright State on Wednesday, and she posted nine total blocks in the Penguins' four-set win over Milwaukee in Saturday's season finale.

This is Varcolla's first honor of the season and the third by a Penguin. Teammate Lauren Blanco earned the Defensive Player-of-the-Week nod on Oct. 16 and Oct. 30.

Varcolla finished the season ranking third in the Horizon League with 1.15 blocks per set. She averaged 1.24 blocks per set during league play, which ranked fourth in the conference.
