Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team got at least seven kills from three different players in a three-set loss to Valparaiso on Friday evening at Beeghly Center.
YSU sophomore Missy Hundelt led all players with 13 kills, and Jackie Carlisle finished with eight. Nichele Johnson added seven and a team-best .333 attack percentage.
Katie Britton had 10 kills, Taylor Root finished with 14 digs and three different Crusaders posted three blocks. Valpo had nine blocks as a team, which helped limit YSU to a .103 attack percentage.
Valparaiso had 18 kills and hit .395 in the opening set to win 25-16, but the Crusaders had to hang on late to win the second set. There were seven ties and five lead changes in the set, but Valpo did not surrender the lead after going up 14-13. The Crusaders led 22-17 and 24-19 before YSU rallied. A kill by Watson and three straight points on Brittany Grove’s serve made the score 24-23, but Watson hit wide to end the set at 25-23.
In the third, a block by Shannon Watson and Carlisle capped a 4-1 run that gave YSU a 13-12 advantage. Valpo answered by scoring the next seven points to go ahead 19-14, and YSU got no closer than four points the rest of the set. The third set had seven ties and six lead changes before Valpo won 25-19.
After hitting .395 and converting on 88 percent of its sideout opportunities, Valpo was limited to a .144 attack percentage and converted 56 percent of its opportunities in the final two sets.
