Boardman - The Youngstown State women's tennis team played host to a strong field in the YSU Invitational which was played at the Boardman Tennis on Friday through Sunday.
Sofia Macias opened the tournament with a win over Ohio Northern's Priscilla Nunez 6-3, 6-4 in Flight A. However Macias dropped her quarterfinal match to Akron's Rita Pedroso 6-4, 6-4. In her first consolation match she picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stella Peisakhova before dropping a 6-4, 7-5 contest to Toledo's Sidnay Huck.
Noelly Nsimba rebounded following a first round defeat to pick up two victories also in Flight A. Nsimba lost to Oakland's Dasha Artamonova 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 in her first match. She came back to defeat Akron's Shannon Newnes 6-3, 6-3. She concluded the tournament with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 win over Toledo's Colleen O'Brien. She also defeated Deedee Leenabanchong of Toledo by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Ana Stroe won her first match with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Oakland's Amanda Nilsson before falling to Ohio Northern's Victoria Monakhova 7-5, 6-3. Stroe also defeated Niagara's Sansriti Ranjan 6-3, 6-2. Nehel Sahni also won her first match beating Niagara's Sansriti Deshmukh 6-0, 6-3 before losing 6-1, 6-3 to Oakland's Alexandra Whall 6-1, 6-3.
In Flight C, Elise Eckman beat Akron's Carla Flores 6-1, 6-4, knocked off Oakland's Sofia Borcuti 6-1, 6-1 and defeated Ohio Northern's Whitney Vispoel 6-4, 5-7, 12-10. Her lone loss was to Niagara's Jasmin Vargas by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
In doubles play, Nsimba and Stroe opened with a 6-4 win over Detroit before losing 6-2 to to Ohio Northern. The duo rebounded to beat Oakland's Borcuti and Motea 6-3 and Toledo's Goodland and O'Brien 7-5.
Macias and Dominika Lackova won their first doubles match 6-1 over Oakland's Whall and Artamonva before dropping their second match 6-4 to Akron's Pedroso and Newnes.
The tournament was the final of the fall season for the Penguins.
