The Youngstown State women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 win over Oakland on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Tennis Courts. The Penguins won the doubles point and three singles matches to beat the Golden Grizzlies.
The Penguins improve to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in the Horizon League while Oakland falls to 6-9 and 2-2.
YSU came out strong in doubles play to seize the point. At No. 1, Ana Stroe and Noelly Nsimba picked up the clinching match with a 6-2 decision. Winning at No. 2 to give the Penguins the first doubles match were Imaan Hassim and Sofia Macias, 6-2.
In singles, earning wins for the Penguins were Hassim, Macias and Nehel Sahni.
Singles play started with No. 1-4 in action and the Guins and Oakland split the four contests. Hassim earned an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win a No. 4 while Dominika Lackova dropped a 6-4, 6-2 contest at No. 1. After Nsimba lost her match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, Macias wrapped up a hard-fought 7-6, 6-2 victory at No. 4.
Making short work of her opponent was Sahni at No. 5 winning 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Penguins. Stroe suffered a 0-6, 6-0, 10-6 setback at No. 6.
YSU plays host to Cleveland State next Saturday in a key Horizon League matchup.
