Head Women's Golf Coach Nate Miklos took part in the YSU ROTC Golf Outing this past weekend at Avalon Lakes Golf & Country Club in Warren, Ohio. The participants were able to raise $538 for the Folds of Honor Foundation in honor of fallen U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ashley I. White-Stumpf. White-Stumpf was killed in Afghanistan in October of 2011.
YSU has been committed to working with the Folds of Honor to help those in need. For the fourth consecutive year, the Youngstown State women's golf team is participating in The Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program. The program recognizes a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who was killed or disabled while on Active Duty.
"It really was an awesome event and it was a lot of fun to be able to be a part of such a great cause" said Coach Miklos.
The team has auctioned off the bag each year with the funds donated to the Folds of Honor Foundation. Over the previous three years, they have raised over $1,000 through the auctions. They have also raised another $1,000 over the past two years through donations including the generous contributions of former head coach Roseann Schwartz and her husband Dick.
The Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot who served three tours in Iraq. This foundation was started to give back to spouses, children and loved ones of soldiers killed or disabled while serving our country. More than 60,000 soldiers have been killed or disabled in the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As of January 2015, one-million plus dependents have been adversely affected by multiple deployments and 90 percent do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor seeks to meet this need by providing annual educational scholarships to the military families of those who have been killed or disabled while in active duty.
White-Stumpf's actions exemplify the highest commitment to duty, honor and country. A graduate of Marlington High School and nearby Kent State University, she sadly left behind her parents, Robert and Deborah, twin sister, Brittany, brother, Josh and husband, Cpt. Jason Stumpf.
