Softball Picks Up Series Sweep With 5-1 Win Over Green Bay

Green Bay, Wis. -- The Youngstown State softball team picked up its second straight Horizon League series sweep with a 5-1 win over Green Bay on Sunday afternoon.

The Penguins have won six straight league games and improve to 23-24 overall and 11-7 in the Horizon League. Green Bay falls to 2-28 overall and 1-15 in the league.

Senior Maria Lacatena went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles while senior Sarah Dowd went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Senior Caitlyn Minney pitched a complete game and struck out six to pick up the win.

Junior Hannah Lucas also had a pair of hits for the Penguins, who collected 10 hits.

Junior Cali Mikovich and Lacatena each had run-scoring doubles in the top of the third to put the Penguins up, 2-0.

After the Phoenix cut the lead in half in the double half of the inning, freshman Elizabeth Birkhead's run-scoring single in the top of the sixth extended the Penguins lead to 3-1.

Dowd's two-run single in the top of the seventh plated Mikovich and Moffatt to push the YSU lead 5-1.

The Penguins return home to face Kent State in a doubleheader, Tuesday, April 25, at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Field.
