The Youngstown State softball program added three recruits during the early signing period, Head Coach Brian Campbell announced. The Penguins signed Elle Buffenbarger, Yazmine Romero and Nikki Saibene to National Letters of Intent and each will be their career at YSU in 2017-18.
"We are really pleased to sign three quality softball players and, more importantly, three quality young ladies," Campbell said. "Each will fill a loss from graduation and help make us a better team."
Buffenbarger, a pitcher from Mason, Ohio, went 22-3 with a 1.37 earned-run average, 196 strikeouts, eight shutouts and two no-hitters as a junior. She was also named the Greater Miami Conference Athlete of the Year and earned Division I All-Ohio honors.
Romero, an oufielder from Castro Valley, Calif., is a three-year letterwinner and batted .400 as a junior. She earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior and was named to the all-conference second-team as a sophomore.
Saibene, who is an infielder and native of Canton, Ohio, was named to the All-Northeast Ohio District Second-Team as a junior and is a two-time second-team all-conference selection. She owns a career batting average of .353.
The Penguins open the 2017 season against Towson and Coastal Carolina on Feb. 10 at the Kickin Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
