Indianapolis, Indiana -- The Youngstown State softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League in a preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches, the league announced on Tuesday.
Youngstown State garnered 43 points and placed behind preseason favorite UIC (62 points), Wright State (55) and Valparaiso (47).
The Penguins, who finished third in the league in 2016, finished 30-21 overall and 15-7 in the Horizon League and return 18 letterwinners and nine starters from that squad.
Highlighting the Penguins returners are All-Horizon League First-Team selection junior outfielder Cali Mikovich, second-team all-league pick senior outfielder Sarah Dowd and All-Freshman Team choice sophomore pitcher Paige Geanangel.
Mikovich, a 2016 NFCA All-Region Second-Team pick, batted .398 and set the YSU single-season home run record with 13 and drove in 41 runs. Dowd, who has 29 career home runs, batted .305 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs while Geanangel went 17-12 in the circle as a freshman. Her 17 win are the third most in a single-season.
