Curry Advances to NCAA Meet in Shot Put With 12th-Place Finish

Greensboro, N.C. -- Junior Youngstown State shot putter Danielle Curry qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships by placing 12th in the event at the NCAA Eastern Regional on Thursday at the Irwin Bell Track.

Curry's throw of 15.71 meters (51-feet, 6.5 inches), was an inch longer than the 13th-place competitor. Florida's Mariam Kevkhishvilli won with an impressive toss of 17.64 meters.

The top 12 athletes from the Eastern and Western Regionals advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships which will be held June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Curry becomes the first YSU woman to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and just the second Penguin (Kofi Owusu-Ansah in 2000 in the 200 metes) to advance to the outdoor meet.

In other action by YSU athletes, Alisha Anthony placed 41st in the long jump preliminaries with a leap of 5.75 meters (18-feet, 10.5 inches) and Aaron Merrill finished 28th in the men's shot put with a toss of 17.11 meters (56-fee, 1.75 inches).
