Guins Cap Off Strong Weekend With 5-2 Win Over Wright State

Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team finished off a strong weekend of play with a 5-2 win over Wright State on Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins improve to 9-12 overall and 3-2 in Horizon League play with the victory while the Raiders fall to 12-10 and 2-4.

YSU set the tone in doubles play winning in impressive fashion at No. 1 and No. 2. The Guins won quickly at No. 2 as Yossi Dahan and Danylo Veremeichuk beat Param Pum and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer by a score of 6-1. The Penguins clinched the point as Vasilis Vardakis and Joao Garretto beat WSU's Michal Kianicka and Fernando Nardelli by a score of 6-3.

In singles play, Dahan and Bassem El Mekawi cruised to a pair of victories. At No. 6, Dahan won 6-0, 6-1 over Carlos Estrada Sanchez and at No. 4 Mekawi beat Javier Alvarez by a score of 6-0, 6-4.

Vardakis clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Pun. WSU earned wins at No. 1 and No. 5 as a pair of Raiders rallied after dropping their opening sets.

YSU's last win of the night was by Garretto. He dropped his first set to Nardelli by a 6-4 count before rallying to win the next two sets by a 6-4 and 10-7 scores.

YSU is in action next Saturday at UIC.
