Bridgeport, W. Va. - The Youngstown State men's golf team finished 16th on Tuesday in The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club. As a team, the Penguins shot a three-round total of 928 with rounds of 309, 306 and 313.

The event was plagued by difficult conditions with heavy, consistent rain on Monday and fog delaying the start of play on Tuesday. Play was suspended late Monday evening due to darkness so the golfers finished the second round Tuesday morning before continuing on to the third and final session.

C.J. Hughes led the way with a three-round 226 (76-75-75) on the par-72 course. The freshman, competing in just his fifth collegiate event, has been YSU's top finisher in two consecutive outings. Hughes was coming off an impressive 10th place finish at the Cleveland State Invitational last week.

Freshman Kevin Scherr turned in a score of 233 (76-82-75). His third-round 75 featured four birdies on the front nine and one on the back nine. Freshman Ken Keller posted a three-round 234 with rounds of 76, 77 and 81 in succession.

Dominic Carano finished the tournament with a three-round 237 (80-74-83). The junior's second-round 74 was the Penguins' lowest single-round score of the event and matched his best of the season. Fellow junior Jason McQuown carded a total score of 243 (80-81-82).

Bowling Green took home the team victory with a three-round total of 864, winning by just two strokes over West Virginia. Alex Weiss of Marshall earned medalist honors with a three-round 208 to finish eight under par.

The Penguins will finish their fall schedule next week, Oct. 16 and 17 with the Detroit Titan Motown Collegiate at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland, Mich.
