Men's Basketball Faces Columbia, Fordham, FIU in Johnny Bach Classic This  Weekend
 
Opening Tip
• The Youngstown State men's basketball team is in the Big Apple for the Johnny Bach Classic, Nov. 16-18, hosted by Fordham in the Bronx, N.Y. YSU faces Columbia, Friday, at 8:30 p.m., Fordham, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and FIU, Sunday, at Noon.
 
The Penguins will return to the Beeghly Center to host Westminster, Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on 570 WKBN.
 
The Coaches
• Jerrod Calhoun is in his second year at Youngstown State and his seventh season overall as a head coach. The 13th head coach in program history, Calhoun owns a career mark of 133-64 overall and 9-26 at Youngstown State. The Cleveland, Ohio, native came to YSU after spending five years at Fairmont State, where he led the Fighting Falcons to the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship game and a 34-3 overall record. Calhoun was named the 2017 Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year and the Mountain East Conference Men's Sports Coach of the Year.
 
• Jim Engles enters his third season at the helm of the Columbia Lions and in his ninth season overall as a head coach. He owns a career record of 138-175 and a 19-36 mark at Columbia.
 
Storylines and Notes
• Six players scored in double figures in YSU's 106-83 win over Heidelberg on Nov. 12. Sophomore Garrett Covington led YSU with a career-high 21 points. 
 
• This is just the second meeting between Youngstown State and Columbia. YSU won the only other meeting in 1982, 55-51.
 
• YSU is meeting Fordman for the first time and facing FIU for the third time since 2013.
 
• Freshman Darius Quisenberry recorded a career-high 16 points while freshman Jelani Simmons and junior Donel Cathcart III also posted career-scoring highs with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
 
• Youngstown State returns five letterwinners and two starters from last year's team. Returning starters include sophomores Naz Bohannon and Garrett Covington. The Penguins also have just one senior,  Noe Anabir, on the roster.

Bohannon Named Preseason All-Horizon League Second-Team
• Sophomore Naz Bohannon was named to the 2018 Preseason All-Horizon League Team after a vote of the league's head coaches, athletics communications directors and media.
• Bohannon was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2017-18 after averaging 7.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, which ranked sixth in the Horizon League.
• He scored 230 points and grabbed 259 rebounds, the most by a YSU player since 1991-92. 
• Bohannon had at least 10 rebounds seven times and posted four double-doubles. 
• Bohannon also scored in double figures eight times and posted a career-high 16 points against Cleveland State on March 2.
 
The Columbia Series
• This is just the second meeting between Youngstown State and Columbia. YSU won the only other meeting in 1982, 55-51.
 
The Fordham Series
• This is the first meeting between Fordham and Youngstown State.
 
The FIU Series
• This is the third meeting between Youngstown State and FIU in a series that dates back to 2013. 
• The Penguins have won the previous two meetings, both in exempt tournaments.
• The Penguins defeated the Panthers, 78-73, in the most recent meeting in 2016.
• YSU defeated the Panthers in the first meeting between the schools, 74-72, in overtime in 2013.
 
Pedersen Notches Back-to-Back Double-Doubles
• Freshman Olamide Pedersen recorded back-to-back double-double over the Penguins' last two games.
• He recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds against Heidelberg and had the first double-double of his career in just his second career game with a career-high 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against Akron on Nov. 10.
• The last freshman to reach a double-double faster than Pedersen was Bobby Hain, who debuted with 19 points and 11 rebounds, in 2012-13.
• Pedersen connected on 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.
• Over the last two games, Pedesen is averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game and connected on 10-of-15 from the floor
 
Quisenberry Hits for Career High
• Freshman Darius Quisenberry notched a career-scoring high with 16 points against Heidelberg on Nov. 12.
• Over the last two games, Quisenberry averaged 13 points per game.
• He connected on 9-of-12 from the free-throw line against Heidelberg.
 
Penguins at the Line
• Youngstown State mede 32 free throws against Heidelberg on Nov. 12.
• It marks the first time the Penguins made at least 30 free throws in a game since they made 33 against Western Illinois in 2001.
• YSU's 42 attempts are the most since it took 43 free throws against Buffalo in 2002.
