Akron Gets Past
Soccer 3-2 in Final Seconds of
Hard-Fought Match
Youngstown -- Carrie
Wack's goal helped tie the game
while Geeneva Strelka put YSU up by
a point against Akron on Sunday
afternoon. But the Guins did not
hold the lead for long as the Zips
answered back just 33 seconds later
to tie the game once again at 2-2.
The two teams continued to fight for
the win until the final seconds of
the game. Akron's Jordan Baranowski
scored the goal that would give her
team the 3-2 victory with 30 seconds
left in game.
Jessica Fix
put Akron on the board early with
her goal off the free-kick at 9:21
into the game. Lauren Brennan took a
shot that was blocked and had a shot
that was saved attempt to tie the
game. Wack then capitalized on a
pass from Alex Lee from 20 yards out
to even the score for the Guins
before half-time.
YSU started
the second half determined to score.
Brittny Humphrey, Nina Pannoni and
Strelka worked to keep the ball in
the Zips territory. Humphrey's shot
was saved while Pannoni's and
Strelka's shots were wide.
Strelka
continued to attack the net setting
up YSU's second goal of the match
and her first goal of her college
career.
Akron fired
back on the kick-off with a goal by
Britni Back to once again tie the
game.
Brennan
attempted two more shots in hopes of
taking the lead before Baranowski's
shot in the final seconds of the
game which proved to be the game
winning goal. With the win Akron
improves to 5-0, while YSU falls to
0-6.
The Guins will
play again on Friday against Saint
Francis (Pa.) on the road. Game time
is set for 4 p.m.
