Marilyn O'Bruba is the Youngstown State Athletic Department's Coordinator of Athletic Academic Advising. O'Bruba and her staff help with tutoring, scheduling and advising student-athletes. She directly supervises football, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, track and field, softball and cross country student-athletes.
O'Bruba, a YSU graduate, has been with the Athletic Academic Advising area since 1988. Throughout her career, she has received countless gratitude from many student-athletes for helping them earn their degree.
In 2010-11, Penguins student-athletes had a banner year in the classroom. In the spring semester, YSU student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of 3.05, which was the best performance of any term in school history. Of all student-athletes an all-time high 58 percent posted better than a 3.0 GPA. In the fall, Youngstown State student-athletes had a 3.03 cumulative GPA. It was the first time that the department had consecutive 3.00 cumulative GPA semesters.
Under O'Bruba, YSU has had 11 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans during her tenure, including four first-team selections: Jarrod Davis (Track and Field in 2006), Scott Theissen (Football in 2003), Anthony Pannunzio (Football in 1998) and John Quintana (Football in 1993). Also, the department has had 53 academic all-district selections since 1993.
On the football side, YSU has had 61 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic selections, including 17 first-team picks. The Penguins have had 21 CoSIDA Academic All-District selections since 1993. Most recently, first-team honoree Stephen Blose was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in 2010.
In 1996, quarterback Mark Brungard earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for his academic and on-field success.
Her office is located in the Jermaine Hopkins Academic Center. She is the daughter of former YSU women's basketball coach Ed DiGregorio.
