Women’s Golf: Rogner, Penguins Take Top Honors at Shortened YSU Invitational

Hubbard, Ohio --
Monday's final round of the YSU Invitational was cancelled because of course conditions allowing the Youngstown State women's golf team and Katie Rogner to earn first-place finishes at the event.

Weather was an issue at the event as the second round of the tournament was cancelled because of heavy rainfall on the course as well as debris due to heavy winds from Sunday night, the coaches announced.

As a team, the Penguins shot a total of 313. Rogner's score of 73, which included three birdies, ties for the second-lowest 18-hole round in school history.

In second place six strokes behind Rogner, was freshman teammate Samantha Formeck who finished the event with a 79. One stroke behind in third for the Penguins was junior Ann Ciavarella who shot an 80 at the event.
Dayton finished the event in second 14 strokes off of YSU, shooting a 327. Chicago State took third place at the tournament after carding a 332.

Humber had to finish its first round on Monday due to darkness and heavy winds, but wound up in fourth after with a total of 340.

Findlay and Walsh tied for fifth place as both squads finished the event shooting a 353.  Robert Morris finished in seventh after they shot a 363.
YSU senior Mollie Boney finished round one with a score of 81, putting her in eighth place. Junior Brittany Stillwagon finished the event in 14th as she shot an 83.  Making her collegiate debut; Jamie Berndt a freshman, carded a 97 finishing  her in 42nd.
Competing as individuals at the event was senior Amanda Brindley, junior Regan O’Brien and freshman Amanda Spitzer.  Brindley shot a round-one total of 80, Stillwagon carded an 83, and Spitzer shot a 94.

The women are off until Sept. 29 when they compete in the Zippy Invitational at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio.  The two-day event will run through the 30th.
