Aaron Merrill Named Second-Team Academic All-America
Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior thrower Aaron Merrill has been named Second-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America in a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Tuesday.

Merrill Named First-Team Academic All-District; Blase Second Team
Youngstown State senior thrower Aaron Merrill (Leetonia, Ohio), a 2009 third-team Academic All-American, was selected first-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-District IV for the second consecutive year. Senior distance runner Lauren Blase (Boardman, Ohio) was named second-team academic all-district as the selections were announced on Thursday.

Penguin Student-Athletes Set GPA All-Time High
Youngstown -- Twenty-three student-athletes achieved a 4.0 grade-point average during the 2010 spring semester, an all-time high 176 or 58 percent posted a grade-point average of at least 3.0 and all Penguin student-athletes combined for a school-record 3.05 cumulative grade-point average, the department announced on Friday (May 28).

Youngstown -- Junior women's golfer Katie Rogner (Warren, Ohio) and senior men's thrower Aaron Merrill (Leetonia, Ohio) will be honored this evening as The Vindicator/Youngstown State Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

The Youngstown State Penguin Club held another memorable Scholarship/Ring Dinner last night at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman where Entrepreneur Sam Covelli, the owner/operator of Covelli Enterprises, Inc., and currently the largest franchisee of Panera Bread LLC, was honored as the 2010 Penguin of the Year.

Youngstown -- Thirty-two Youngstown State University student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the 2009 fall semester while 176 (52 percent) had at least a 3.0 GPA.

Promotional Schedule Highlighted by Kids Days, Fireworks Shows
The Youngstown State University Athletic Department is set to play host to five hard-hitting games at Stambaugh Stadium this fall. This years promotional schedule features two State Farm Kids Tailgate Fun Days, two BJ Alan Phantom Fireworks Shows, Homecoming 2009 and Senior Day, the department announced on Monday.
