Football: Williams,
Elliott, Barlak Named HBK
Players of the Game Against South
Dakota State
Youngstown – Senior
wide receiver Ferlando Williams, sophomore
free safety Andre Elliott and
senior snapper/linebacker Mike Barlak were named the Hill Barth &
King Players of the Game for their
performances against South Dakota
State, the
coaching staff announced on Tuesday.
Williams had four rushing attempts
and caught two passes for 25 yards
against the Jackrabbits to earn HBK
Offensive Player-of-the-Game Honors.
Williams played both wide receiver
and quarterback in the contest.
Elliott finished with a career-best and team-high nine stops
to be named the HBK Defensive Player
of the Game. He was credited with
four solo and five assists in the
contest.
Barlak was named the HBK Special
Teams Player of the Game for his
efforts. He finished with six total
tackles, including one for a loss.
He serves as the team's long
snapper.
For the second consecutive week Crispin Fernandez was
selected as the Jermaine Hopkins
Defensive Lineman of the Game.
Fernandez had two tackles in the
contest that saw two Penguins
defensive linemen injured.
Senior offensive tackle Tyler Booth
was named the Jim Zdelar Offensive
Lineman of the Game.
Earning scout team honors for their
roles during week were Dionte Snow
(offense), Stephen Meadows (defense)
and Bryan Gaiters (special teams).
Sophomore fullback Kyle Banna earned
the W.O.W./Derek Pixley Hit of the
Week while junior quarterback
Brandon Summers was tabbed the
Haines Family Player of the Game.
Senior tight end Derrick Bush
received the Wachovia Leadership
Award.
In the national polls, which were
released late Monday, YSU slipped to
23rd in the Sports Network Poll and
is now 24th in the FCS Coaches Poll.
On Tuesday, Head Coach Jon Heacock announced that
junior quarterback Todd Rowan (Braceville,
Ohio/LaBrae) has left the football
team.
Rowan started the first two games of the season for the
Penguins. In two games this year, he
had completed 14-of-23 passes for 84
yards and one interception.
Heacock also announced the senior
defensive tackle Mychal Savage will
miss the remainder of the season
with a shoulder injury and sophomore
defensive end Luke Matelan is
sidelined for the season with a
broken foot. Savage, who has never
redshirted, could apply for a
redshirt season if he so chooses.
Sophomore defensive tackle Torrance
Nicholson is out at least two weeks
with a broken bone in his foot.
YSU plays its home opener on Saturday against Central State.
Kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium is set
for 4 p.m.
