Football: Porter Earns President's Council Academic Excellence Award

-- Former Youngstown State
defensive tackle Matt Porter was
among seven student-athletes, which
highlighted more than 200 who were
named to the 2004 Gateway Football
Conference Honor Roll, as announced
by the league office on Tuesday.
Besides Porter, the six other individuals who captured the
Gateway Football Conference
President’s Council Academic
Excellence Award, which is the
league’s highest academic
achievement, were Tom Petrie of
Northern Iowa; Stanley Bryant and
Chris Kupec of Southern Illinois;
Brad Durham of Southwest Missouri
State and Perry Cox and Justin
Langan of Western Illinois. The
President’s Council Academic
Excellence Award requires a minimum
3.5 cumulative grade-point average
(through the 2004 fall semester),
participation in athletics a minimum
of two years and the student-athlete
must be within 18 hours of
graduation.
Porter joins former Penguins Scott Thiessen (2003-04), Shawn
Bilker (1999-2000), Bill Ruggles
(1999-2000), Jared Zwick
(1999-2000), Anthony Pannunzio
(1998-99) and J.J. Stefancin
(1997-98) as recipients of the
award.
Fifty-three student-athletes received the league’s
Commissioner’s Academic Excellence
Award. That requires a minimum
grade-point average of 3.2 for the
previous two semesters, a minimum
3.2 grade-point average for the
current term (Fall 2004), and
participation on the football team.
Freshmen are not eligible. Twelve
Youngstown State football players
were recipients of this award
including Matt Brouse, Nick Forro,
Ryan Jewell, Tom Krupko, Ryan
Martino, Bob Perez, Porter, Jim
Smith, Brent Steiner, Nick
Terracina, Bryant Wilson, and Tom
Zetts.
In addition, the Gateway Conference has announced its 2004-05
Honor Roll, which recognizes
academic achievement of football
student-athletes. To qualify for the
Honor Roll, a student-athlete must
have recorded a minimum 3.0
grade-point average for a specified
term (Fall 2004), must have been a
member of the football team, and
must have a minimum of 12 hours of
enrollment during the fall.
Student-athletes from Youngstown
State include Dave Allen, Matt
Briggs, Brouse, Erik Claxon, Tim
Dewberry, Tanner Dunlap, Jameson
Evans, Forro, Jewell, Max King, Tom
Krupko, Tony Limongi, John Marcum,
