Department Begins NCAA Division I Certification Process
Youngstown -- David C. Sweet, president of Youngstown State University, announced today that YSU will begin an 18-month, campus-wide review of its athletics program as part of the NCAA Division I athletics certification program.
“The purpose of this program is to help ensure integrity in our athletics operations,” Sweet said. “This study will focus on academic integrity, governance, rules compliance and the university’s commitment to equity and student-athlete welfare.
“We are confident that this review will show that YSU meets or exceeds all of the standards set by the NCAA."
All Division I universities and colleges are required to undergo NCAA certification every 10 years. YSU successfully completed its first certification self-study in 1998.
Sweet and Cynthia Anderson, YSU vice president for student affairs, will chair a steering committee responsible for conducting the study. Other members will include various members of the university faculty, staff, students and athletics department personnel.
Once the university has concluded its self study in May 2006, an external team of reviewers from peer colleges, universities or conference offices will conduct a two-day minimum evaluation visit on campus in fall 2006. That team will report to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, which will determine YSU’s certification status and announce the decision publicly in February 2007.  For institutions that fail to conduct a comprehensive self-study or to correct problems, sanctions can be imposed.
The three options of certification status are:  (a) certified, (b) certified with conditions, and (c) not certified. While universities have an opportunity to correct deficient areas, those that do not take corrective actions may be ruled ineligible for NCAA championships, said Ron Strollo, YSU executive director of intercollegiate athletics.

Updates regarding the progress of the self study will be available on the YSU sports web page at www.ysusports.com.
