Niles, Ohio
-- Youngstown State’s quest for
another magical run through the U.S.
Army Horizon League Baseball
Championship at Eastwood Field
begins Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The Penguins, attempting to match their success from four
years ago when they captured the
tournament title at Eastwood, will
take on the winner of Tuesday’s
play-in game between Butler and
Valparaiso.
YSU enters the tournament coming off its best week of the
season, knocking off 30-win teams
West Virginia and Kent State and
defeating Milwaukee twice to earn
the No. 3 seed. If the Penguins win
their opening game, they will play
No. 2 Wright State on Thursday at 3
p.m. If YSU falls, it will play an
elimination game Thursday morning at
11.
Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Aaron Swenson will start
game one against either Valpo or
Butler, teams he went a combined 4-0
against during the regular season.
Seniors Chuck Schiffhauer and Adam
Kalafos and sophomore Corey Vukovic
have also been solid starters.
YSU has a trio of second-team all-league players in the
lineup - Sean Lucas (3B), Joe
Iacobucci (OF) and Eric Marzec (UT).
Former first-team selection Erich
Diedrich and first-team academic
all-district pick Josh Page are two
of four players on the squad who
were members of the 2004
championship team as true freshmen.
