Illinois-Chicago Outlasts UW-Milwaukee, 9-6
Niles, Ohio -- The UIC Flames
scored five runs in the first and turned three inning-ending double plays en
route to a 9-6 victory over UW-Milwaukee in the second round of the Horizon
League Tournament Thursday morning at Eastwood Field.
The Panthers came back to tie the score at five in the fifth,
but UIC scored four unanswered to help them advance to play the winner of the
Youngstown State and Cleveland State game Saturday at 12:30 p.m. UW-Milwaukee
will play Wednesday night at 6:30 in an elimination game against Butler.
Ryan Zink picked up his ninth win of the season as he allowed
five runs over 6 1/3 innings and struck out three. David Haehnel allowed one run
over the final 2 2/3 innings for his fourth save. Robert Michalkiewicz was
tagged with the loss for the Panthers despite allowing only two runs in 6 2/3
innings of relief.
The Flames sent
nine men to the plate in the first, scoring four runs on five hits and two
walks. Mike Hughes put the Flames up in a hurry as he he hit a three-run
bomb to right to plate Ted Rosinski and Bryan Russo, who led off the inning with
a single and a walk. Then, with two outs, Brad Ryan and Shane Crowder hit
RBI singles to put UIC up 5-0.
UW-Milwakee cut the margin to two in the top of the second on
three hits and a Flame error. After the first three Panthers reached, Joe
Nowicki scored on Sam Jansen's fielder's choice and Ross McCoy came around to
score on a throwing error by first baseman Justin Johnson. The Panthers
tacked on another run when Matt Alexander brought home Zak Rivera with a two-out
single to right.
The Panthers then tied the score in the fifth when Nowicki
connected on the first pitch for a two-run homer to right, but UIC got the lead
back immediately in the bottom half of the frame as Nelson Gord singled home
Jordan DeVoir.
The Flames added three insurance runs in the eighth when
Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and DeVoir hit a two-run
single.
UW-Milwaukee put the tying run at the plate in the ninth as
it loaded the bases with one out, but Haehnel struck out Ben Stanczyk and
Nicholas Wischer after a passed ball to seal the win.
